Safety Speakers Insights – Safety a Serving Profession

Posted by John Drebinger |

Safety – a Serving Profession

As a reader of this newsletter, you are a part of the safety profession. Safety speakers like myself are here as a business but we serve people. It might be a voluntary position or your primary job, either way, you are a member of a very special group of people. I suspect my love for serving others began when I learned the value of service as a member of the Boy Scouts back in the 1960’s. There are many professions or career paths which serve others, teachers, military, police, fire and the list could goes on. I wanted to remind you safety is one of those professions or duties which serve other people.

You Change Lives

As a member of a safety team, you impact many lives. Even as a temporary assignment, you are personally responsible for people making it home safely every day. We often focus on reports which show the number of injuries for a month or a year. The report we never see is the one which lists every incident we prevent. When someone follows a safety procedure it ensures their avoiding an injury. When someone uses the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) they walk away uninjured when something goes wrong. Because you influence someone to tuck in their fire retardant shirt, they avoid a burn when flames come their way. I would encourage you to think for a moment of all the positive impacts you have on the lives around you.

You Change The World

It even goes beyond the workplace. When someone you have reached with the importance of safety goes home and uses proper PPE or safety procedures it spreads to their neighborhood. Their friends and family see them using hearing protection when mowing the lawn or using a snowblower. The more and more people see such behaviors the more safe practices become the norm.

You Make A Difference

I believe every life is important, everyone has a purpose to fulfill during their lifetime. Every person on the job is vital to the success of the entire team. Injuries change what people can do. Some injuries end lives. In either case, someone is not able to have the same impact they would have had prior to being hurt. When you keep someone safe you are helping them succeed in living their life.

Our successes are the successes of families, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters. We make it possible for people to fulfill their purpose in life unencumbered by injury .

Thank you for serving others, I am proud to be a member of your safety team.
