Safety Speakers – Thinking of New Safety Topics

Posted by John Drebinger |

As one of the nations top Safety Motivational Speakers I am amazed how writing a daily blog on safety has improved my ability to come up with new topics. My current technique is to reflect on the events of the day and think about any significant moment that would illustrate a safety concept or idea.

Also, during the day when something comes to mind, I make it a point to write it down immediately. We have all had the experience of coming up with a great idea or answer and later not being able to remember it. The remedy for that is to write it down. Even a couple of key words will help you remember the entire idea later.  In my book, “Mastering Safety Communication” I discuss more ways to come up with ideas.

Once a day, I sit at my computer and begin to write, first, an idea, a thought or a question. Next, I flesh out that idea until I have something I am pleased with. It is not uncommon for the final product to be completely different from where I started.  Also, I find new ideas develop as I am writing. One thought leads to another so I just type those at the end of whatever project I am working on and add them to my idea list when I am done.  Sometimes I just continue on and write out the new idea at that time.

Several years ago, I had the privilege of interviewing a very talented magician named Andre Kole. You may not have heard of him as he specializes in doing shows for churches to be able to spread their message. He is, however, very well known amongst his fellow magicians. You see, Andre Kole has invented many magic tricks you have seen on TV done by people like David Copperfield and others.

Andre Kole grew his creativity by deciding that he was going to invent 100 new magic illusions or tricks in one year. Most magicians wouldn’t create a tenth of that number in their entire lifetime. This commitment caused him to figure out a way to do it and sure enough he reached his goal.

What goals or commitments are you making to yourself when it comes to safety motivation and safety training? Challenge your mind and you will be pleased and amazed with the results.
