Backup Plans – Safety Speaker John Shares A New Perspective

Posted by John Drebinger |

Backup Plans – A New Perspective
As a safety speaker I get to spend many days traveling and fortunately I enjoy it. This is a good safety topic to share with your employees that will help them remain safe when they are on a business trip or help keep their family safe when away from home.

It is always good to be prepared for the unexpected. When you are away on business it is always helpful to plan ahead on where you might rendezvous with your fellow travelers in the event you are separated. After the bombing at the Boston Marathon this year we need to look at that planning in a different way.

Before this event it was simple all you had to do is pick a location everyone knew and agree to meet there. This however would not have worked in Boston. I have a client who was at the marathon with his family. They had a rendezvous point but after the explosions that plan was not going to work. The challenge was that the police had blocked off the downtown area and that was where they were going to meet the person running the marathon. To make matters worse cellular phones were not working well if at all.  (Another topic for another day: Plan for what to do when technology fails you).

Another helpful tip is to plan ahead if you can’t get back to your hotel room. What items do you need to keep with you, ID, money, cellular phone, etc.

Just a few weeks ago I was visiting Disneyland with Sandie Gilbert who handles all my international bookings and special projects. Before we entered the park we established two plans of action. One was to have a meeting place somewhere just outside the park. Second was to meet at a location we knew of that was about 4 miles away. With that plan in action most situations are covered. Be Safe, Safety Speaker John Drebinger.
