How Safety Speakers Create Material – Focus and Safety Solutions
Safety speakers often talk about focus and it’s role in safety. I’m sure you have told employees how important staying focused is to being safe. Distractions can set people up for an injury. Focus is also important when you are looking for safety solutions. When you are writing a safety lesson or talk, creating a new safety procedure or solution, interruptions can interfere with the creative process.
Step one is write down the solution you want to achieve. This clarifies for your mind what your target is. Next, eliminate distractions. Turn off the notifications on your computer or your cellular phone. Silence or even better yet, put your phone in airplane mode. Second, ask yourself what the best solution is to the item you wrote down in step one. Safety speakers and safety professionals who can eliminate distractions will create better material.
Next, begin writing. Write anything, just begin writing. Putting words on paper stimulates the mind and helps you create new ideas. Allow yourself to focus and think only about these solutions and ideas. I use headphones and an iPod to play music without lyrics in the background. Sit and relax and write down whatever comes to mind. Remember, you will refine and expand on these writings later. Too many safety speakers edit during creation and that just stops the creativity.
The value of focus is you begin to immerse yourself in the solution. It’s fine to read or watch information on the subject as long as you stay focused. It takes discipline when doing internet research because many interesting side topics can pop up. To stay focused, if I spot an article on a different subject, I will copy and paste its URL onto a page to review later.
I have read creativity articles which claim it takes twenty minutes to build a state of focus. I have never seen any research proving that concept. The point is, for you there will be a period of time it takes to truly immerse yourself. From my personal experience, the ideas can come right away or after some time. Either way focus helps.
In my book, Mastering Safety Communication I have a chapter on creativity check it out here: https://drebinger.com/shopping-cart/mastering-safety-communication-book/
Another trick is to develop a routine, which is always the same. This allows your mind to get in a writing state much faster. You will find without distractions many new solutions to your safety challenges will come to your mind. Have fun discovering your creative skills.
