Instilling Safety As a Value in Our Children
As a safety motivational speaker for the past 20 years I get to see a wide variety of techniques to encourage people to take on safety as a value. A couple of weeks ago I spoke at a company safety day that included spouses, and children. It was my second year at this event. As I was preparing my customized presentation for them I began to think of my first exposure to safety as a child. I was born in 1950 to give you a time perspective. I remember in elementary school when we had a fireman come to our school for an assembly. He talked about safety around the house. Things like too many plugs in a socket, keeping sharp knives and tools out of the reach of little children and of course fire safety.
When he was done talking about safety he handed out a home safety inspection form for us to take home. It had items to check and mark if they were safe or not. We didn’t have to bring it back to school but he encouraged us to have fun doing it.
I wonder how the children’s opinions were shaped by their parents response? As for my parents we went through the whole house, garage, and outside dutifully checking each item. The significant part for me was their willingness to do this activity because they perceived it had value and they fixed anything we found wrong. My respect for my parents was expanded to include their attitude toward safety.
Make it a point to remind your employees how much their value for safety can affect the lives of the ones they love. Not only does their working safely get them home every day it also shields their family as they develop the same beliefs, values and behaviors.
Spring and summer will be here before we know it. I know for those of you sloshing through snow and ice that day never seems far away yet it will arrive. Now is a great time to consider planning a special Summer Safety Day for your employees and their families. I would consider it a privilege if you considered having me speak and perform at such an event. My material reaches many ages and I can remind parents how important safety is to them and their children. It really connects the importance of safety to one of the best reasons people tell me they want to work safely.
