Making Safety Fun – Ideas by John Drebinger Safety Speaker
Well how about if we look at new ways to make safety illustrations fun and interesting for a few days? One of the first unique safety illustrations I remember hearing about early in my career over 21 years ago was about fall protection. The safety speaker at this meeting wanted to point out to people how serious a fall even from a short ladder could be. A ladder was at the front of the room someone climbed the ladder and was handed a watermelon or cantaloupe. A vertical post had height measurements marked out on it. Melon after melon was dropped from different heights. Each one broke apart on impact creating a great visual effect.
The safety speaker made it a point to show how high your head is even if you are only standing at the four foot level of a ladder.
Logistical considerations: A tarp would be helpful for indoor presentations. Slip free footwear for the participants as the floor will get wet quickly. A cleanup team to keep debris to a minimum. Make sure everyone can see, rehearse and have people sit in the room where they would be during the demonstration.
