No Regrets – One Reader’s Experience by Safety Speaker John Drebinger
Do employees read my book, “Would You Watch Out For My Safety?”™? You bet they do! In fact, many companies who do not normally have meetings at which they could bring me in as a safety speaker, have ordered copies for their employees and they are very pleased with the results. I am also pleased because in several cases, the employees have benefited so much from the techniques I teach in the book the client has created an occasion for me to come and speak in person. I discuss a conversation I had with one such employee in the following story.
Before one of my presentations entitled, “Would You Watch Out For My Safety?”™ someone walked up and informed me they had already read my book of the same title. Excited, they shared an incident in which they behaved differently because of what they had read.
They were driving down the highway and noticed a truck with a load exceeding the length of the truck bed. The driver or person loading the material had placed a red flag on the overhanging material, yet it was very difficult to see. After seeing this, the person shared with me, remembering what I taught in my book. They realized if they took no action, someone might be injured if they didn’t see the ineffective warning flag.
They dialed 911 on their phone and informed the highway patrol of the hazard. The 911 operator thanked them for informing them of this situation.
The person shared with me because of my book, they chose to report the unsafe condition rather than risk the regret of not having done so.
As a safety speaker, I ask my audience members to share ways they have put the techniques I teach to use. You should ask the employees at your site to share with you ways they have been positively impacted by your safety efforts. When they do, you can put that information to use in several ways. First, get their permission to share their story. Many people don’t mind sharing the story of how safety has gotten them home safely, they just don’t want to be the person who stands in front of a group telling that story.
