Plan Ahead for Safety by Safety Speaker John Drebinger
I was on the phone with a friend and they were expecting ice storms. If you have never experienced freezing rain you are lucky. I remember one January driving from East Texas back to the airport when I noticed a very pretty sight. The trees glistened as the light hit them. Suddenly, I realized they were coated with ice. As the rain fell, it immediately froze on whatever it hit. The road was still unaffected due to the diligent work of the highway department.
My focus and awareness went way up. I watched as far ahead on the road for any signs of ice. I knew what I was going to do if I saw any and I made sure nothing distracted my focus. I also was willing to get off the road and miss my flight if it was the safest thing to do. As a safety speaker I get to some very unique situations and planning ahead is a key survival technique
An important thing to do in any situation is to notice the conditions in which you are working and consider the potential for what could go wrong. Then plan ahead. Know ahead of time what conditions will determine when you will stop the job and then stick to that plan. From someone working in a manufacturing plant to someone driving home, you need to assess the potential risks, what you will do to avoid them and what you will do if they become too prevalent.
