Daily Safety – Putting Others at Risk – Safety Speaker John Drebinger
As I was driving to the refinery at 5am in New Jersey to give a motivational safety presentation, I encountered a situation, which reminded me how people’s actions impact the safety of those around them. In this particular instance, it was the second day after a major snowstorm in the Northeastern United States. The streets had been cleared of up to one foot of snow and few of the sidewalks had been completely shoveled.
As I drove, I saw a pedestrian walking down the cleared road to avoid the hassle of walking on the uneven and poorly cleared sidewalk. I imagine they even thought it was safer to walk there as the highway department had salted the road effectively and there was no ice on the road. There still was ice on the sidewalks.
The problem was the cleared road was barely wide enough for two vehicles to pass, let alone adding a pedestrian into the mix. I watched as vehicle after vehicle moved closer to the center of the road to pass the pedestrian leaving only a few inches between them and the oncoming car. One missed lump of ice on the road would have thrown the cars into a head-on collision or into the pedestrian.
Seeing this scene, I was reminded that sometimes people choose to do something unsafe and it impacts the safety of others. My reaction was to drop back to make sure when I passed the pedestrian there was no oncoming traffic to complicate the situation.
Remind your friends, family, and employees that it is important to be safe because it may cause someone else to be injured.
