Safety and Prayer by Safety Motivational Speaker John Drebinger
As a safety motivational speaker this week was fun. I took off for Phoenix, Arizona from Sacramento
going through Los Angeles. On board the flight to Phoenix from LA,
Diane calls to let me know the safety meeting scheduled for the next
day was probably going to be canceled as the utility workers would be
working on restoring the power to the people of Phoenix after a major
storm. I was disappointed and I also realized I might be stuck in
Phoenix as flights were being canceled for the rest of the day.
While my wife Karen was working on getting me back to Sacramento, I
began to think about the people for whom I had planned to present. My
first thought was that there wasn’t anything I could do to help them
work safely until I met with them next month. I knew they would be
working feverishly over the next few days to restore power to their
customers in the Phoenix area. They would be working with time
pressures and the elements of the weather creating an even more
dangerous work environment than normal. The part of my mind that
doesn’t give up made me wonder what I could do.
It was then that I realized there is one aspect of safety that many of
us could incorporate into our safety process. It isn’t as typical as
are some of the concepts I teach and yet it is an activity we can use
to help in the protection of our fellow workers and our families. That
activity is prayer. For those of you who value prayer, consider
including on a daily basis a prayer for the safety of those around you
and your fellow workers. Supervisors, you can pray for the safety of
the people who work for you. While I waited several hours for my
flight I knew I could pray for the safety of the people I had traveled
to protect in the first place.
While I understand that prayer is not familiar or comfortable for all
of us, consider for a moment how it can enhance your pursuit of safety.
You are now bringing your safety concerns before your creator and that
will positively affect your safety mindset. If you are asking for
God’s help, you will likely keep safety a little higher in your mind,
as it would be inappropriate to invoke the help of God and then ignore
safety yourself.
Prayer can also move you from a feeling of helplessness, to a state of
peace, reminding you that you and the people you pray for are loved
and cared for by God. So whether the concept of prayer is new for you
or one that you are well acquainted with, I think all of us should
consider how prayer can become a part of our safety success story.
