Safety Motivational Speaker Alert – Independence Day July 4th – Holiday Safety
As I was driving around town, I noticed the fireworks displays are ready for providing fireworks to our local families. This week would be a good time to remind your employees of the importance of safety off the job. As a safety motivational speaker I am always looking for natural lead ins to a safety topic. There are many hazards that can harm employees and their families. A few that come to mind are:
- Fireworks
- Water Safety – Pools – Rivers – Lakes
- Barbecue and Grilling
- Food Safety
- Driving Under the Influence
- And many more I’m sure you can think of.
Fireworks
Independence Day is a great opportunity to discuss eye safety. Encourage your employees to go out this week and purchase safety glasses for anyone who will be lighting or working with home fireworks. I don’t want to get into the issue of what age children should be able to use hand-held sparklers, morning glories, etc.; however, I do know that no matter what age you or your local jurisdiction allows them to participate please be sure they are wearing eye protection. Adults, this is a good time to set a great safety example.
Water Safety – Pools – Rivers – Lakes
Particularly in areas which have had more rain and snow the rivers people are familiar with are moving much faster this year. Children should always have life jackets near rivers, on a boat or on shore. If you are using a pool, be sure someone is WATCHING the water, things happen so quickly and if someone is watching constantly a tragedy can be avoided. In, on, or near lakes, boating and swimming safety is important including jet skis and other devices. A member of our church recently lost a grandchild due to a jet ski collision. As a safety motivational speaker it is always tough to hear because we know it was probably preventable.
Barbecue and Grilling
Making sure fire-starting liquids for charcoal are used safely and kept out of the reach of children. Check propane tank leaks and connections. Watch out for that black widow or brown recluse spider who is hiding in the grill you haven’t used all winter.
Food Safety
Be sure to put food away that needs to be refrigerated. Food poisoning from food left out can ruin a great day.
Driving Under the Influence
Make sure everyone is sober before leaving your Independence Day activities.
Have a safe and happy 4th of July! By the way, here is a great question you can ask people to see if they are paying attention.
Question: Do they have a 4th of July in Great Britain?
Typical Answer: No, of course not!
Your Reply: Then what comes between the 3rd and the 5th?
Have fun and be safe.
