Safety Motivational Speaker Tip – Car Seat Safety Check

Posted by John Drebinger |

Safety Motivational Speaker Idea You Can Use

As a safety motivational speaker I see many innovative ideas my clients use to improve the safety of their employees. One of the best ways your leadership can show they truly care about their employees is to teach safety they can use at home. Keep in mind you are not regulating or insisting on their behavior off the job, you are giving them the resources they can choose to use or not. A Linkedin blogger, Phil LaDuke had a great thought provoking article keeping your nose out of my personal business. https://philladuke.wordpress.com/2017/07/09/keep-your-nose-out-of-my-homelife/  Phil writes some excellent articles and posts that get you thinking. You may or may not agree with him but he does make you think and that is worth its weight in gold.

Help Them Protect Their Children and Grandchildren

One issue I don’t see often in my travels as a safety speaker is car seat safety. Many of your employees have children or grandchildren who for legal and safety reasons must be in a car seat or booster. This particular type of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), requires proper use and installation to achieve the protection it is designed to deliver. In fact when used improperly they can be more dangerous than using no seat at all.

Make It An Annual Event

Perhaps once every year you could have a car seat fit check. Contact your local law enforcement agency or fire department to see if this is a service they provide. You could do this as part of a special safety day where you bring in a special safety motivational speaker such as me to speak.

You can check out sites like: 50 Best Booster Seats For Your Car https://www.safety.com/booster-seats/ or look up the most current information as part of your efforts.

As a fan of safety belt use I often mention in my presentation as a safety motivational speaker the importance of wearing a safety belt.  This teaches your children to do the same. This is a great motivational tool as parents will do a lot to help protect their children that they wouldn’t do for themselves. Occasionally I bump into (pun intended) one of those people who still doesn’t use safety belts. They believe they are a great driver and don’t need them. While you and I know this is foolish I always look for the way to change their mind. I point out that their children don’t have their years of experience and skills. I ask them, “If a drunk driver comes across the yellow line heading for their child’s car. Do they want them wearing a safety belt?” If so they had better use theirs all the time if they want to build that skill in their children and grandchildren.

When you have the event take lots of photos. Post them with people’s permission on posters and on your website. Also have resources for new hires to get theirs checked between events.
