Safety Motivational Speaker Tip – Secrets of Safety Success – Part Three – How To
How to Do It
As a safety motivational speaker I have learned many secrets of success from my clients. Here is part three.
When President Kennedy said we were going to the moon the people at NASA were thinking, can we actually do it. The challenge was the techniques to accomplish the task didn’t exist. We would have to create new materials and solutions that the engineers and scientists didn’t even know was possible. In the HBO series, “From The Earth To The Moon,” there is a great scene where the NASA director James Webb asks Bob Gilruth, “Can we do it?” The answer, “Yes, we have to.” As a safety speaker early in my career I had clients requesting I come back to their site with new presentations. It became a must for me to discover how to develop new programs to help them improve their safety performance.
The next step was the, “How to do it.”
When you have the vision and the commitment you have the driving force behind the how to.
An Example of Someone Discovering How To
An example comes to mind of something I saw at the Boy Scout Jamboree in 2010. I have been involved in Scouting for over 55 years. At summer camp we loved to build pioneering projects. Monkey bridges and signal towers were our favorite as the camp had the resources for building both.
In my 20’s as a scoutmaster in Minnesota when I was attending seminary I received permission from the local camp to cut our own poles to take back to the town of Lauderdale to use for projects at the local park.
One weekend we were building a 20 foot signal tower when one of the scouts fell off the structure. He collapsed a lung and was coughing up blood. It was quite a scare. The ambulance took him off and he quickly recovered. The outcome could have been much worse.
We didn’t build any more towers after that. I did think it was a shame that the newer scouts didn’t get the experience of building a tower. I didn’t have the vision or the commitment to find a safe solution. In writing this I almost said I didn’t have the knowledge and it hit me that when you have the vision and commitment you can find the knowledge.
Fortunately someone did because at the 2010 Jamboree they had a 20 foot signal tower. This one however was safe to build and climb on because they had put a large metal frame over the tower project area and installed fall protection. Any scout climbing up the side of the tower was safely tied off. They had the fun of building and climbing the tower without the unnecessary risk.
Someone had the vision and commitment to figure out a way to keep this a part of the scouting experience safely.
As a safety motivational speaker, I wonder how many safety solutions are out there just waiting for the right person to come along and find them?
Today’s safety challenge is tomorrows vision and solution. Remember the steps, 1. Vision, 2. Commitment, 3. How To.
