Safety Motivational Speaker Tip – Secrets of Safety Success – Part Two – Commitment
Safety Motivational Speaker Tip – Secrets of Safety Success – Part Two – Commitment
As a safety motivational speaker I have discovered the elements of safety success from my clients over the years. So you have a vision now what? Commitment! That is exactly what President John F. Kennedy did on May 25, 1961 when he announced to a joint session of Congress that we would send a man to the moon by the end of the decade. That commitment extended even beyond his own life. Perhaps just as Disney saw Walt Disney World before it existed, Kennedy saw us planting a flag on the moon.
Commitments make doing something a must! Are you willing to do whatever it takes to achieve your vision. Most people have dreams many even have visions, however very few have the commitment to make it happen. It’s not necessarily about public commitment. Many self-improvement people tell you to announce your goal to others. It seems to me true commitment comes from within. For instance over a year ago I committed myself to publish one newsletter per week. Up until then I had not sent this newsletter out on a regular basis. In fact I had to laugh on occasion I would overhear my marketing director ask someone on the phone if they had been getting my newsletter and they politely said yes even though I knew I hadn’t posted one for over two months.
My commitment to myself is how I started. I knew I owed it to you, my subscribers to consistently share insights which would help you achieve the safety results you are looking for.
The Measure of Commitment
When you have true commitment you don’t let any obstacle get in your way. One great example of never giving up is what you do when you are driving to pick up your children. If you come upon construction or a closed road you don’t stop and go home without them. You find a new route.
As a safety motivational speaker I travel to many safety conferences. I have met safety professionals who were so committed to safety as a value that they changed companies when they realized their leadership’s belief was not committed to safety. One person shared with me that their leadership had told them, “It is easier to pay for an injury than to prevent it.” He soon found a better place to work.
In the past two years I wanted to create an eLearning program to provide my clients a way to bring what I teach to a broader audience. It isn’t always convenient to bring me to every small location. The challenge was that no matter what direction we took it was a dead end. Because of commitment we kept looking for a different solution. Finally we learned how to do it and the first course is now available http://www.safetyspeakerdrebinger.com/
Making It A Must
The real test of commitment is that it is a MUST HAPPEN. The famous quote from Gene Kranz, NASA Flight Director, “Failure is not an option,” is a good example. You have to make it a must and you will cause the third secret of safety success to happen. Step three is discovering the, “How To.” When you must succeed your brain will find the how to.
Next week my safety motivational speaker tip will be, “How To.” of safety success.
