Safety Motivational Speaker Discovery – You Can Learn Something New Every Day From Your Audience
As a safety motivational speaker I learn so much from my audiences. While people were arriving for my presentation last week at the National Safety Council’s National Congress I was visiting attendees to my session. Someone in the room made a coughing sound and I asked if they were OK. We then discussed we often mean are you going to be OK or do you need help. Someone then asked if anyone knows what people who are choking do when they are in trouble. We all thought of not being able to talk or holding their neck. The answer most of us did not know was, they leave the room. Because people can be embarrassed when they are choking they get up and walk out of the room out of the sight of others. I shared I had actually done that one time. I walked into the next room and used a chair back to do a Heimlich type maneuver. If I had been unsuccessful I would have been in real trouble.
The person sharing this information said they learned that when someone coughing or appearing to be in trouble leaves the room someone should go out and check on them. It would make sense to do this without asking them as if they were really choking they wouldn’t be able to respond or they might be embarrassed. They also shared that they followed someone one time and they needed his help so he did a Heimlich maneuver and they were fine. As a safety motivational speaker I never thought of that.
I have had extensive first aid training over the years and I don’t remember anyone sharing this important information. This is the perfect example of a quick safety moment you can share before any meeting.
