Safety Off The Job Tells People You Really Care
I had a great day in Washington state at the River Corridor Closure 3-million safe hours celebration. As one of their safety speakers I have the privilege of sitting in on their meeting. Their safety share that started the meeting dealt with motorcycle riding and the end of winter. They wanted to make sure everyone who rides a motorcycle was sure to refresh their skills since during the winter’s snow and ice they hadn’t been out on their bikes.
What impressed me about this topic was that it had nothing to do with safety on the job. Trust me no one rides a motorcycle around their site to do their job. So how does this improve your workplace safety? One obstacle I have heard in talking with employees deals with intent. Some people don’t believe the company leadership is truly interested in their safety. They think they are just doing safety because they have to or because it will save them money.
Your employees are very sharp and they will notice when you talk about safety on the job and off the job. If you take it one step further to talking about their family’s safety, they will really understand you hold safety as a value and you do care about them.
Studies have shown that employees who know their employer genuinely cares for them will be more productive. So show them you care and talk about safety on and off the job.
By the way, when I speak to employees, I often congratulate them for having the wisdom to choose a company to work for that is committed to safety. If you want me to come and do the same for you give us a call at 209-745-9419.
