Safety Speaker Asks, How Powerful Is Your Reason To Work Safely?
Safety Speaker Asks, How Powerful Is Your Reason To Work Safely?
One of the great pleasures of my career as an international safety speaker, is being able to share with you ways my clients are improving their safety performance. A few weeks ago, I shared with you the best safety briefing I had ever seen with BNSF Railway.
If you didn’t see that issue you can read it here. (Click Here) or go to: http://www.drebinger.com/safety-briefing-an-outstanding-example/ The article was republished in Industrial Safety & Hygiene News (ISHN) and a BNSF Railway media person spotted their name in the article. As a result, they called to interview me about the techniques I taught.
A Great Example of Employee Involvement
This past week, I had the privilege of speaking in the Coso Mountains of California. I saw something else I want to share with you. The Coso Operating Company held a safety celebration and invited me to be their safety speaker. When I arrived at the meeting, I saw on the back wall of the room, they had created a very powerful backdrop.
They asked employees to share why they want to work safely. They took regular sheets of paper and using a program like PowerPoint made small posters of two or three answers with the employees’ names printed below. There were quite a few sheets of paper posted at the front of the meeting room where I was speaking. Here is a picture of that wall.
Their Reasons Were Powerful
Many of the reasons related to family; some were serious and some were funny. One guy wrote, I work safely because I don’t want my wife to get my life insurance money. Some of the reasons had pictures accompanying them. Before the meeting, people were pointing out their quote or picture to their friends. There was no question they were actively involved in the safety of each other.
How To Create Powerful Reasons
Next week, I will be discussing ways you can help your employees make their reasons to work safely as powerful as possible. The following video is an example of one reason that came to me as I was leaving my house.
