Safety Speaker Insights on the Upcoming New Year
Happy New Year! Well not quite yet.
There are many who use the new year for resolutions and other traditions. As a safety speaker I have some thoughts on how you can use this annual event.
Take Advantage of the New Year
I want to take a moment to share some thoughts on how you can take advantage of the beginning of a new year. If you have had any safety set backs it’s a great place to start fresh. If you are among the many sites who have had a good year you get to aim to be even better this year. In fact, as a safety speaker I have discovered that aiming for better performance is one of the best ways to overcome complacency.
Remember It’s People Not Numbers
Be sure to coach your leadership to focus on talking about people. Too often, beginning of the year talks are all about statistics. People want to know you care about them. Several years ago before I gave my talk to the employees at Yosemite National Park, the park superintendent gave a great talk. He asked the first three rows of people to stand up (about 18 people). He then explained that was the number of employees injured two years ago. Then he asked nine of them to sit down. The remaining nine people represented the nine injuries of last year. He said a 50% drop in injuries was their best year ever, however the real issue was for those nine it was their worst year ever. Zero injuries needs to be the vision was how he concluded hls talk. This was a great way to personalize the numbers for the year.
I hope you all have your best year ever and if there is any way I can help please give Diane Weiss a call at 209-745-9419 or you can email her at diane@drebinger.com. I can always be reached on my cellular phone if you have a question for me, 209.747.9645.
Until next week,
