Safety Speaker Question – What Video Are You Producing Today?
Safety Speaker John Drebinger Asks, “What Video Are You Producing Today?”
As a safety speaker at a recent safety meeting, the day began with a video which dealt with an incident resulting in a fatality. The incident happened in another country thousands of miles away. It was in the same industry as everyone in the meeting. In the video, you learned about the person who was lost, what lead up to the incident and how it happened. I am sure many of you have seen similar videos during your career. Hopefully at a safety conference and not at your own site.
As a safety motivational speaker I have seen far too many. Later that morning, one of the corporate leaders gave an outstanding presentation. They explained how important it was for everyone from the newest employee to the most experienced person to stop everything when they notice something wrong. (The fatality occurred after someone had noticed the unsafe situation but it had not been corrected prior to work starting.)
Corporate Leader Gets Them Thinking
The corporate leader gave a great talk. They used a phrase throughout, which I really liked, “What video are you producing today?” As he discussed the safety concerns of his company he would stop after each item and ask the question again. Obviously, all the choices and decisions which lead to the incident in the video could have changed the outcome. He pointed out everyday we make choices and decisions. These decisions determine the video that could be made about our life. Are you creating a video which is a positive example for everyone or the video of a tragic incident.
In previous articles, I have shared the power of asking questions. As a safety speaker I know questions can lead people to change their beliefs and behaviors. The question, “What video are you producing today?” is one of those type of questions. People can’t argue with a question, they can only contemplate the possible answers.
I suggest using this question when you want people to think twice before they make a choice that could result in an injury.
