Safety Speakers Insight – Persuasion, Sales and Safety by John Drebinger
I bet you never thought when you became a safety person you would be a salesperson. Safety team members and safety speakers need to understand the importance of sales in what they do.
Part of being effective in communicating safety is your approach. Safety speakers have the job of selling people on working according to company procedures. Some companies just tell people the “safety rules” and figure their obligation is complete. Companies that have safety as a corporate value understand this isn’t enough. We need to help people understand that following all safety procedures, using appropriate personal protective equipment and watching out for others all benefit them personally.
I looked up a definition of sales or selling and it reveals an approach we would find useful in helping people work safely.
“Selling is about discovering the prospect’s need by asking them and actively listening to them, and then having a joint plan to help them achieve their needs better, faster and more cost-effectively than anyone else could help them.”
What if as safety speakers we asked people their opinion of safety and its importance? What if we asked them why safety was important to them? If we ask and listen to people they will often give us the insights as to what would motivate them to work safely. We need to help them achieve their need to return home safely every day.
In the meantime, listen and think of the needs of those you hope to protect.
