Safety Speakers Tips – Questions Can Be Your Compass
Safety Speakers Insights – The Power of Questions
Safety speakers need to understand the power of the questions they ask themselves and others. Here are some tips from chapter one of my book, “Mastering Safety Communication” which you can purchase on this website. (Click Here) The direction your thinking takes is quite often directed by whatever question you are attempting to answer at the moment. Questions may give either positive or negative direction to your life. Questions contain a bias, which will effect the answers you get. The questions we ask direct the results we achieve so it is important to design the questions you, as a safety speaker, ask yourself, to insure a positive result. For example, if you ask, “Why can’t I come up with any good ideas for safety meetings?” You will end up with a list like:
- I’m not creative.
- I’ve tried everything.
- I’m just not good at this sort of thing.
If you ask, “What new ideas could I come up with for my next safety meeting?,” you will get a better list. I believe motivational safety speakers must make sure they ask the most powerful questions they can when developing their presentations.
What If I Get Stuck?
Safety speakers are called on to provide answers and write new material. On occasion, you might get stuck and not be able to come up with an answer. The basic technique in dealing with this is to respond with the following question or a slight variation thereof.
“I know I don’t know _______, but if I did what would it (or they) be?”
For example, consider the above question. As a safety speaker, what new ideas will I come up with for my next safety meeting? If you were stuck you ask yourself, “I know I can’t come up with any new ideas for safety meetings but if I could what would they be?” If you need further assistance with this, check Chapter Eight, “Creative Ideas”.
