Safety Speakers What’s Your Outcome?
I have had the privilege of coaching many safety speakers over the past 24 years. My Dynamic Meetings Institute was created in 2001 to allow me to spend three, focused days with people who wanted to improve their presentation skills. Safety speakers who only spoke internally to their own employees as well as several top national speakers have attended this fun and informative class.
Safety Speakers Are Story Tellers
Essentially all safety speakers are story tellers. The key is what is the outcome of your story and are you limited to only telling your story. As I was learning from my mentors in the early 90’s I made it a point to go and see as many presentations as I could. I also went to as many sessions by speech coaches to learn how to create a message that set me apart from other safety speakers.
Safety Speakers Creating An Emotional Experience Isn’t Enough
One speech coach spoke at the National Speakers Association and told the story of his working with one of the top motivational speakers of that day (not in the field of safety). He shared a story of how he and his wife listened to that motivational speaker’s presentation and she raved about it. She was surprised when her husband, the speech coach, told her all the shortcomings of the speech. His main point was, “It was a very moving story and I am impressed the young man overcame his disability but how does that help me and my company or my employees? He agreed everyone left the room emotionally moved but what then? No skills were taught the audience members could use to improve their life.
As she thought about it, she realized he was right. As it turns out, the young man hired the coach and the power of his presentation changed. Everyone feels moved by an emotional story but that isn’t enough. Very few safety speakers have the skill to craft a story that causes people to put practices, techniques and skills into use. Skills that will help them get home safely every day. Skills they can use off the job to keep their families safe. If you are wondering who those safety speakers are, we can tell you; just give my office a call.
That same speech coach taught me the importance of having more than one story. My clients, like you, also taught me the value of this when year after year I’ve been asked me back to your site to deliver a new message. Over four years with just one refinery, I started with my earliest talk, Safety, What’s In It For Me? and then created, Safety the Team Approach (which was later replaced with my latest presentation, Would You Watch Out For My Safety?™). The next year I wrote, Safety As A Value, and then Safety for Leaders.
Each of those presentations was entertaining and kept the audience’s attention; however, the most important factor was each presentation taught skills and techniques that each person in the audience could put into practice immediately.
Safety Speakers Need A Variety of Stories
I learned to interview as many people as possible and they wanted me to share their story with my audiences to help everyone get home safely every day. Having a variety of stories allows me to customize each presentation to meet the needs of my clients and their employees.
