Safety the Big and the Little by Safety Speaker John Drebinger
Have you ever noticed it’s the little things that quite often get people hurt? I have talked to many safety people who have had a great year. No major injuries, no lost time injuries, and zero recordables. In a facility where there is always the potential for a serious injury or even a fatality, I find it ironic that someone trips in the parking lot, slips on the ice, or trips in a hallway on something someone spilled.
How do these happen? It seems to me that when the potential consequences of a mishap are severe, the easier it is to stay focused. I also suspect that once you are done doing something hazardous you relax and let your guard down. Remember to remind people while they are relaxed they still need to keep their safety focus high.
If you need help getting your people to focus bring me in as a safety speaker and have me do my presentation, “Ensure Your Safety” which has a complete section on maintaining and regaining focus and avoiding distractions.
