Sharing Close Calls – John Drebinger Safety Motivational Speaker
When I was the safety motivational speaker at an event at NASA’s Langley facility I heard a couple of wonderful presentations. They were done by employees who had experienced a close call and were willing to share what happened with the entire workforce to ensure their safety. Prior to the meeting the safety team had me meet with them the day before to give them some presentation coaching. Not everyone is aware I am available for that type of service. After we spent some time together we had focused their message and sharpened their techniques.
The next day they gave their talks and the best part was that their fellow employees were hearing from their peers how important safety is. Now some of you might not be sure any of your people would be willing to stand up and share a close call. So what do you do? Good question!
What you can do is talk to people and when you do ask them about their safety experiences. Ask them if they have ever had a close call. When you find one listen carefully and take notes. You now have a couple of options. You could ask them if they would share this experience at an upcoming safety meeting. Or you could ask them if you could tell their story. It’s up to you and them with their permission to use their names. You could tell the story and have them possibly available for questions during the break.
