Shooting for Safety – Safety Speakers Tip

Posted by John Drebinger |

Shooting for Safety – Safety Speakers Tip

I had the privilege of being one of many safety speakers at the Region 6 OSHA VPPPA conference in Little Rock, Arkansas. The topic of one of my classes had to do with how to motivate employees to work safely even when no one is watching. Sitting in the front row of my first session, was a gentleman wearing a shirt with the slogan, “Shooting for Safety” on it. I asked him about it and he mentioned they came up with the idea because many of the workers at their site are hunters. I was thrilled as it tied in perfectly with what I had planned on teaching.

Motivate From the Perspective of the Person You Are Motivating

Each one of us has reasons which motivate us to make safe choices throughout our day. The mistake many safety speakers make is they assume what motivates them will motivate others. That is a very big error when it comes to being an effective communicator. The key to effective communication and motivation is to think like your audience or the person you are wanting to influence.

Safety Slogan People Can Relate To

The safety team who came up with the slogan, “Shooting for Safety” was thinking like the people they wanted to reach. Keep this in mind the next time you want to persuade someone to work safely or begin using a new safety procedure or device. When you think like them, you will be much more likely to come up with reasons they would want to work the way you are hoping they will. Ask yourself what are the interests, hobbies, beliefs, and values of the people you wish to motivate. When you have these answers you will be much more likely to achieve the outcome you desire.
