Warning Signs -Truth or Fiction? by Safety Speaker John Drebinger
There are safety stories everywhere you go. When you pay attention to what is going on around you they can become a part of your safety presentations. This week, I was buying gas and ran into the store to get a soft drink. As I did, I heard a guy ask the cashier if it was still wet near a “slippery when wet” sign.
The cashier answered, “No, it dried up.”
The gentleman then offered to move the sign out of the way as it was a trip hazard all by itself. I walked over and thanked him for correcting the situation and watching out for everyone’s safety.
All too often, as a safety speaker I see these signs used in areas where it might get wet. The problem is people walk by and see there is no hazard except for the sign and they begin to doubt its accuracy. When people continually see the sign is incorrect they will habitually begin to ignore the warning. Now, there is real danger because when there is a actual slip hazard it will be ignored.
If you have an area that potentially may be slippery, put a permanent sign in the area cautioning about the possibility. It would be similar to the signs you see on the highway warning a bridge may freeze before the road approaching the bridge. This is a good cautionary sign.
Our credibility as safety team members and professionals is at stake when we continually warn about hazards that don’t exist. Language does matter and it is important to distinguish between a potential hazard and one that is currently an impending threat.
Next week, I will be announcing a short, 2-minute video you may use for fun at an upcoming safety meetings. We hope it goes viral on the internet. Our plan is to release it to the safety community in the middle of March and then everyone else at the beginning of April. You may have figured out where this is leading. Thanks for subscribing to the newsletter.
Until next week,
I’ll be, “Watching Out For Everyone’s Safety™”
John
Each week, I will highlight one of my many safety presentations available for a variety of safety meetings. We have just updated our preview video of my presentation “Ensure Your Safety” (Click Here For Video Preview) The video is about 14 minutes in length and covers the key points I teach in the presentation. It has portions of some of my magic effects and a full start-to-finish of my newspaper tear including the safety lesson I teach during the magic trick. When you have the time be sure to watch all of it.
When people take personal responsibility for their own safety, injuries will disappear. The question is, “How to make that happen?” The answer is, “Ensure Your Safety.”
John reveals for each and every person in his audience their own personal “why” and then through examples and stories, motivates them to perform their duties in the safest way possible. Safety Speaker John Drebinger has helped thousands of employees realize the benefit to them when they willingly accept personal responsibility for their safety.
As a result of John’s “Ensure Your Safety” presentation…
Your employees will:

Work safely because they want to, not because it’s a rule.
Known for his effective and unique safety presentations, motivational safety speaker John captivates and motivates your employees as no other speaker does. His reputation for effectiveness has resulted in his teaching presentation and communication techniques at the American Society of Safety Engineers and the National Safety Council’s national conventions for more than two decades.
With his skills as a master of safety communication, John will break through the common objections people have when they come to a “Safety Meeting.” The mindset of, “We have heard it all before,” is shattered as soon as he takes the stage. As a member of the prestigious Hollywood Magic Castle, John is able to keep the audience’s attention with his magic effects, which each convey a safety concept and will have them talking about your safety meeting for months.
For each of your shifts, John will deliver a fun and effective safety message that will get everyone to want to work safely, bring that same safety mindset home with them, and give you a more productive workplace with zero injuries to report.
