The very first National Safety Council Convention I attended I learned something from a safety speaker there that has always reminded me we need to show people how they can be safe and comfortable. His focus was to get people to use life jackets when fishing, boating and doing any activity on or near the water.
He was in the Coast Guard and knew there are regulations that require lifejackets in certain situations. He preferred to get people to want to use a lifejacket. In his talks, he brought along many styles of lifejackets that looked like normal clothing yet would keep you afloat.
His demonstration got people to rethink their attitude about lifejackets. I wonder how many other safety topics we could do the same?
