Ways People Know Safety Is One of Your Values by Safety Speaker John Drebinger
How do people know what your values or beliefs are? The most common answer is that actions speak louder than words. I would suggests that your words are an action unto themselves. How often do you speak about safety? People know a lot about you by listening to what you talk about. I can assure you that if you have a conversation with my friend and co-author of the book, “Changing the World”, Darrel Deuel you would discover very quickly he is committed to world missions. He is passionate about it and will bring the conversation around to that subject very often.
You will hear me talk about my relationship with God, also about my family, Boy Scouts, and the space program. You will also hear me talk about safety in addition to these topics even when I am not on a speaking engagement.
In the workplace employees listen to how much leaders talk about certain topics.. Sales, production, marketing, maintenance… safety. If you or your leaders only talk about safety a very small percentage of the time people quickly discover how important a value safety is for you and your leadership.
I rememember a sign I saw in front of a church, “If you were on trial for being a Christian would they have enough evidence to convict you?” A similar question could be asked of safety leaders, “If you were on trial for being a safety leader would they have enough evidence to convict you?”
Make sure you support your safe actions with safe words that let people know what your values are.
